  Considerations
What should employees consider when they choose trustees and schemes?
Product (plan and fund)

Note whether there are sufficient fund choices and whether the choices can meet personal needs. Pay attention to, for example, the features, levels of risk, and performance of funds (past performance of funds does not reflect future performance and can serve as reference only);

Service quality

Understand the scope of services and service quality of trustee. For instance, whether the account details provided by trustee are easy to understand, whether channels for inquiries are convenient and diversified, the number of benefit statements sent to plan members each year, and the number of times plan members can change the portfolio each year.

Fees and charges

Should compare with fees and charges of funds of the same sort;

Personal conditions

Should consider personal investment goals, ability to bear risk, current life stage (years until retirement) and other personal situations before making the final decision.
Will there be any risks involved in ECA?
Should note the following risks when transferring benefits:

Unpredictable changes in market trend

MPF scheme offers a long-term investment and you should not make any transfer only because of short-term volatility of fund prices without thorough consideration. It is hard to accurately predict the changes in market trend, and therefore you should be prudent when making a transfer.

Time-lag leads to 'sell low, buy high' scenario

There is a time-lag of around 1 to 2 weeks during the transfer when accrued benefits are not invested in any fund. Fund prices may change during the time-lag due to market volatility, which may lead to a 'sell low, buy high' scenario.

No specified transaction price

Just like other ordinary funds, MPF is traded at an unknown price. As such, you cannot sell or buy fund units at a specified price. Transaction prices of funds need to be determined by the net asset values of the funds after market close on a trading day.

Not necessarily get guaranteed return of guaranteed fund

If your investment portfolio covers guaranteed funds, you should pay attention if a transfer of accrued benefits may make you fail to satisfy certain conditions for having the guaranteed returns.
Do all employees have to make a transfer?
No, this is not the case. 'Employee Choice Arrangement' aims to increase the discretionary power of employees in choosing MPF trustees and plans. Employees can decide whether to make a transfer and it is not necessary for them to do so.

In addition, transferring accrued benefits may not necessarily generate a higher investment return. Employees also have to be aware of the time-lag of around 1 to 2 weeks during the transfer of accrued benefits.
